About this Item

Typed poetry book. Slim octavo. Stapled textblock with paper backstrip. Text in Portuguese. Cover and first leaf with rusty paperclip impression and front cover with a tiny v-shaped tear, near fine. Nicely inscribed to a poet and longtime foreign service worker on the front cover: "To Minister Niles Bond / with my sincere friendship / Maria Thereza / June 1968." Prints 13 sonnets by Galv�o Bueno, including the dedicatory sonnet, addressed to Brazilian poet Paulo Bomfim. Laid in is a Typed Poem Signed, "Aos M�rtires de Liberdade" ("To the Martyrs of Freedom") by Galv�o Bueno, also nicely Inscribed to Bond. Also laid in is a typed poem, a translation by poet Raquel Maria Huguet and Signed by her. As "esta primera traducci�n" is addressed to Bond (and a quick online search turned up no corresponding English text), we wonder if this is a poem of his. We haven't been able to find much about Maria Thereza Galv�o Bueno; according to *OCLC* she published six books in Brazil, and there is a "Rua Maria Thereza Galv�o Bueno" in S�o Paulo. According to (of all things) an Instagram fan account, she was Harvard educated and lived from 1927 to 1996, although we haven't been able to corroborate those details. A charming and very likely unique book of sonnets from a known Brazilian poet.
