About this Item
First UK Edition/First Printing. Hardcover. Near fine book in a near fine unclipped dust jacket. Jacket has wear to the upper front cover. Signed and inscribed by the author on the dedication page: "For Robert Gard on one of the great occasions 8th March 1980 Patrick White." The "great occasion" referred to in the author inscription was the 1980 Australian premiere of Benjamin Britton's last opera, based on Thomas Mann's "Death in Venice" for which Gard played the part of Aschenbach (as he did in the movie version.) Additionally inscribed to Gard on the front free endpaper by the Australian producer and dedicatee of The Twyborn Affair, Jim Sharman.
