Item description from seller

Boston: The Society, 1830. First edition. Original printed wrappers, 20 pp. When William Emerson died in 1811, Frothingham succeeded him as pastor of the First Church. Emerson's son, Ralph Waldo, and Frothingham had a cordial relationship though the latter disagreed almost totally with the tenets of the Transcendental movement. He presided at the funeral of Emerson's mother, Ruth, in 1853. A little soiling, browning, a Very Good copy. $60. Another copy, original printed wrappers, a presentation copy: "To Mr. Greenwood with the sincerest respect and regard. N.L.F." This must have been Rev. F.W.P. (Francis William Pitt) Greenwood, who edited the Christian Examiner from 1831 to 1839 (Mott, 1957, v.1). Foxing, chipping, damp-staining, a Good copy, only.
