Item description from seller

Octavo; (xi), 253pp; illustrated with 9 b/w photographs. A Very Good copy (offsetting to front pastedown and ffep) in original green cloth lettered in gold and ruled in blind. 'This story of the Philadelphia Orchestra has been written during the past few months. My endeavor has been to give the story in a simple form and to use the Appendix for the statistics which should be recorded at a Twenty-fifth Anniversary.' (Foreword). Signed by author Wister, the first (and, at that time, only) President of the Symphony Alexander Van Renssalaer and legendary conductor Leopold Stowkowski. The author was a prominent Philadelphia philanthropist and preservationist (and cousin of author Owen Wister of 'The Virginian' fame), Director of the Orchestra and Chair the Women’s Committee of the Orchestra; Van Renssalaer was one of the founders of the Symphony; Leopold Stowkowski was one of the leading conductors of the early and mid-20th century.
