A very scarce first edition author"s presentation copy, containing twenty-five poems by the journalist and critic John Brainerd Capper, one of which features the author's annotations. In the publisher's original paper covered boards.First edition.Author"s presentation copy, inscribed to the front free endpaper: "E. W. M. Grigg from J. B. C. With every good wish, & in memory of old comradeship. Jan. 7, 1923." Below, the author has added "vide p. 17", referring to the poem R.I.P., which features the inscription at the head of the page: "The Thames Embankment Trudge (P.H.S. to Victoria St.) (4 a.m. in those days. 1905)".A moving collection of poems written in the aftermath of the First World War, with titles such as: "The Silent Heart," "Reminiscence," "Sunrise Song," "An Anniversary," "The Pagan View," and "Sick-Nurse Helpmate."John Brainerd Capper (1865-1934) was a British journalist, editor, and author associated with The Times and the Westminster Gazette. In the publisher's original paper covered boards. Externally, very smart. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities. Slight discolouration, loss, and rubbing to spine label. The odd minor handling mark to boards. Offsetting to endpapers. Author's presentation inscription to front free endpaper. .Internally, generally firmly bound. Hinges cracked at the half title and between pages 48-49, with binding materials exposed, but holding firm. Pages bright and clean with one or two spots to fore edge and first and last few leaves. Author's inscription to page 17. Very Good.
