About this Item
Stated First Edition. Impersonally signed on the blank front end paper: 'With my warmest regards--Helen MacInnes.' I found only two other signed copies of this book for sale anywhere on the Internet, one selling for $175.00, the other for $225.00. You can see the front cover of the book in the photos (I am limited to five photos, if you want ones of the spine and rear cover just send me a note). There is a little bit of whitish spotting off both the top and bottom edges. There are also five or so light spots on the light blue part of the front cover. The same is the case on the rear cover off the top and bottom edges, a little less. And the same on the light blue part of the rear cover. I don't see any spotting on the spine. The silver illustration on the front cover is really very nice and is quite bright. On the spine the silver lettering is bright, though on a few of the letters a little bit of the silver has come off. There is a very thin, light vertical crease on the spine. There's a little bending/crinkling and the spine ends, no tears or loss, also a thin bit of fading at the top one. There is a thin scratch off the bottom edge of the front cover. The cover edges don't have any fading or spotting. The bottom rear one has two teeny tiny nicks. The cover corners are in very good shape, the two bottom ones have tiny spots of rubbing. The page edges are quite clean, a couple of very tiny spots on the top one. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages and nicely tight covers as well. The interior of the book is in excellent condition. Whatever caused the little bit of spotting off the covers top and bottom edges did nothing to the pages. There is no foxing, no spotting on any of them. The white inside covers and end papers are very clean. I have scrolled very slowly through the pages a number of times and found only three instances of soiling. Two are at the bottom of page 259, neither touching the print, and one is just a little brown speck off the top edge of page 99, obviously very far from the print. The pages are also in excellent condition. I didn't see any conspicuous creasing, no placeholder creases. In fact I found only one tiny crease above one bottom corner, the tip had folded in and I flattened it out. There are no markings in the book. There are no attachments of any kind. And the signed inscription by the author is the only writing to be found anywhere. You can see the dust jacket in the first three photos. I have always had it in a fitted protective cover. There is a little bit of scuffing at both spine ends and at the lower part of the front just adjacent to the middle edge. There is one small tan spot off the front bottom edge. There is some toning on the blue part of the spine. There is also tanning/toning at the white margins of the rear cover, and a few tan spots on one of the white margins there. It is sometimes hard to tell with a protective cover, but I don't think there are any tears on the jacket. There are very tiny losses at three of the four middle edge corners. The middle edges are otherwise in very good shape. The flaps look very good. There is a thin bit of tanning off the top edges of both flaps. The previous owner did make little, neat clips at the four corners. However, the clip at the front flap's top corner did not reach, did not touch, the price. From the dust jacket: 'The men and women who move through this novel illustrate the truth of Joseph Conrad's words, 'An island is but the top of a mountain,' and what is seen is only a small part of what lies beneath. The same qualities of dramatic tension and insight into the human spirit that characterized Helen MacInnes' last book are brilliantly evident in her new novel. She knows how to create people who are interesting and exciting; she knows how to make a place come alive: Washington here is residential, not governmental-- as much a city of romance and social activity as have Paris London.'.
