Add to basketWritten by an author who spent a good portion of his life as a seaman and who experienced poverty in the early 20th century as the son of a blacksmith in Northumberland, England. The story of 16 year old Rod Barnstaple, an orphan trying to overcome his unhappy environment as a galley boy on the steamer, Ludlow, is perhaps informed by some of the author's personal experience. Illustrated by D. G. Valentine: dj, book cover and internally (b/w sketches). Condition (dust jacket): still intact - see image. However, it is very frayed in places; with small sections missing; especially at the head and tail of the spine. Condition (book): the drawing on the upper cloth board mimics that on the dj (or vice versa). While appealing, it is the case that the cloth shows some marking and mild discolouration in places. Internally the book displays mild tanning throughout; slightly more evident on the book s preliminary and final pages. Signed/dedicated by the author in ink and dated Feb. 1964. pp. 181/8vo. First USA edition. Please note that, depending on destination, we may request a payment to cover any extra shipping/postage charges. Proceeds to Amnesty International. Abe2521.
