FIRST EDITION, FIRST IMPRESSION. Presentation copy inscribed by Bawden on the flyleaf to the editor of this anthology, "To Gwyeneth Lloyd Thomas from Edward Bawden 9/1/47", and with a pencil note below in another hand (presumably Thomas'), "On sale in London Friday 10 Jan. 47 - Rec d by me Camb. Tuesday 14 Jan. 47. Cambridge Friday 24th (Transport 'strike')". Mary Gwyneth Lloyd Thomas (1899-1978) taught English at Cheltenham Ladies College where she was a friend of Charlotte Epton, later Bawden's wife. In 1928 she became a lecturer in English at Girton College, Cambridge, a post she kept until 1952 when she was made a Life Fellow. Thomas was a regular visitor at Brick House, the Bawdens' home in Great Bardfield, Essex. In 1938, when Bawden's friend Eric Ravilious and the author J.M. Richards were stuck for a title for their book, it was Thomas who came up with 'Hight Street'. Octavo. Copious lithographic illustrations by Bawden. Several minor pencil annotations by Thomas throughout text (to dates etc). Lower edges rubbed, tail of backstrip bumped, light offsetting to endpapers. Otherwise an excellent copy in near fine unclipped jacket with mild toning to spine panel. Seller Inventory # ABE-1748431482924
