A day by day travelogue covering a seven-month journey, by Mather, accompanied by his mother and her companion, to New Zealand, Australia, the Celebes, Java, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Macau, Canton, Manilla, Shanghai, Japan and stops in between. Self-published in 250 copies, the book lingers in detail on the author's numerous gambling exploits, and confidently about the people and places visited. His biography remains mysterious, but he travels, thanks to American Express, and meets prominent businessmen along the way. In the American Embassy in Tokyo he has a sour encounter: "As is usual at any of our Embassies with which I have ever come in contact, especially if making a perfectly legitimate request, some snooty 3rd assistant secretary finds it very difficult to bring himself anywhere near down to my level, and after telling me he knows nothing about the show and therefore I must have been misinformed, he only condescends to try to get invitations for us when he learns that I have had an invitation from Japanese sources to the Emperorâ s garden party last Saturdayâ ¦." "It Is because of this very unpleasant attitude of officiousness that I never go near an American embassy unless it is positively necessary.".
