About this Item

New York and London: D. Appleton and Co., 1864. First edition (BAL 1683, 2nd state). Original brown "T" cloth, binding "C". Signed in full by Bryant, and dated March, 1864". Above the signature, penciled in another hand: "Presented to the Metropolitan Fair in aid of the Sanitary Commission." The Metropolitan Fair was a New York City effort in support of the private "United States Sanitary Commission" which provided support for the families of Union soldiers in the Civil War. An attractive bookplate, "Elizabeth S. Woodruff / Her Book"; a little wear at the spine ends; gilt a bit dull; somebody laid a moist quarter, it appears, on the front board. A Very Good copy.
