Here are just a few of the many examples that are given. Often, well set tables had small individual butter plates and open saltcellars. glass pitchers with silver coated tops for syrup and molasses, cake was served on a glass cake stand, a crumb tray and brush were used to sweep the tablecloth after meals, homes were lighted with kerosene lamps or coal oil, with a glass chimneys. * Nowdays, the old time traditions are obsolete.
