In 1956, Deborah, Duchess of Devonshire, youngest of the six Mitford sisters, invited the writer and war hero Patrick Leigh Fermor to visit Lismore Castle, in Ireland. This halcyon stay sparked off a deep friendship and a lifelong exchange of highly entertaining letters.
There can rarely have been such contrasting styles: Debo, unashamed philistine and self-professed illiterate, darts from subject to subject, dashing off letters but hitting the nail on the head again and again without even looking, while Paddy, polyglot, widely-read prose virtuoso, replies in his characteristic fluent, polished manner.
Prose notwithstanding, they have much in common: enjoyment of life, youthful high spirits, generosity and lack of malice. There are glimpses of President Kennedy's inauguration, weekends at Sandringham, filming with Erroll Flynn and, above all, of life at Chatsworth, which Debo spent much of her life restoring, and of Kardamyli, the home that Paddy built in his beloved Greece.

Terms of sale
Our aim is to supply decent condition books on a wide variety of subjects at realistic prices. All are pre-owned, some are much older than we are, but all are a source of pleasure. We know from our own experiences that buying "blind", so to speak, can be a shade tricky so we are always happy to supply pictures and try for as full a description as possible. We pack well and do our best to post promptly (within a couple of working days of receipt of order). We'll take things back if, after all that, you feel something's not as described. Occasionally Royal Mail lose an item. In such rare occurences we do what we can to try and trace it. By and large they're a miracle system - we send out umpteen parcels a week and most of the time they get there. But if there is a problem we try genuinely to help sort it out. We think we've got the balance about right. Our feedback on various sites seems to suggest this. Many thanks in advance for buying or just looking. We know what a bewildering choice is available on-line these days. We appreciate you choosing us. You are most welcome as are any queries.
