Inscribed by the author on the front endpaper "To _____ with sincere appreciation, C.L. Carlsen, 2/3/17 San Francisco" Tucked inside the book is a two-page letter to the same person for whom the book is inscribed. The letter is dated 2/5/1917. Carlsen writes about his thoughts on writing the book, various reviews of the book, and a bit of his own history in the San Francisco Bay area, begining with his birth in Alameda in 1880.
