Item description from seller

Prima versione inglese. Testo inglese. Cm.22,5x17,8. Pg.XII, 128, (4). Legatura in mz.tela con piatti cartonati. Tassello cartaceo, con titoli, applicato al dorso. Esemplare in barbe, su carta distinta, vergata. Frontespizio impresso in rosso nero. "The book describes Huygens's conception of the nature of light propagation which makes it possible to explain the laws of geometrical optics shown in Descartes's La Dioptrique, which Huygens aimed to replace. Unlike Newton's corpuscular theory, which was presented in the Opticks, Huygens conceived of light as an irregular series of shock waves which proceeds with very great, but finite, velocity through the ether, similar to sound waves. Moreover, he proposed that each point of a wavefront is itself the origin of a secondary spherical wave, a principle known today as the Huygens?Fresnel principle. The book is considered a pioneering work of theoretical and mathematical physics and the first mechanistic account of an unobservable physical phenomenon" (da Wikipedia). > Hardy / Perrin, "The Principles of Optics", 4, "The outstanding characters of the 17th century were Christian Huygens and Sir Isaac Newton". Burke, "Origins of the Science of Crystals", 41, "In his study of the double refraction of light exhibited by the Island Crystal, Huygens viewed crystal regularuty as being the result of the ordering of similar invisible contiguous particles which were ellipsoids of rotation". Bussotti / Lotti, "Cosmology in the Early Modern Age", 313. 400 gr.…
