LIMITED EDITION. First US Edition, stated 'FIRST EDITION' on copyright page, limited to 500 copies, this hand-numbered '50' in each volume. Two volumes, SIGNED by Liddell Hart, and Robert Graves respectively. Octavo. pp. x, 236 and pp. x, 188. Bound in the original publisher's cloth bindings, with lettering pieces and gilt decorative bands to spines and impressed lettering to front boards, top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Clear, removable, archival protective sleeves fitted to the dust-jackets. Both volumes are in Very Good condition indeed. Good dust-jackets with spine darkening and minor blemishes, but which are not price-clipped (showing 'Price, $20 the set'). Lacking the slipcase. NOT FOR SALE First US edition, no. 50 of 1,000 numbered sets signed by Graves and Liddell Hart, of which 500 sets were for Great Britain and the remaining 500 for America. 'These volumes [.] are remarkable documents showing Lawrence's intimate work with two of his biographers. The letters, manuscript commentary and corrections, reveal the nature of information Lawrence supplied and the interpretation he allowed the authors to derive from it. These volumes expose a process of biographical writing that is rarely documented' (O'Brien). The set was printed in the United States, and Higginson and Williams state that the Graves volume was first published in the United States in December 1938, and that the British edition of the volume was first published on 12 January 1939 (despite the statement on the verso of the title-page that it was first published during December 1938 in Great Britain).
