About this Item
Stated First Edition. A very rare signed copy. The author has signed and inscribed the first front end paper ('For Lona & Michael, with love, Agatha'). She also flat-signed her full name on the title page along with the date ('Dec. '68). The About the Author page at the end of the book states: 'Agatha Young's almost lifelong involvement with medicine began in her native Cleveland when, as a very young woman, she underwent an extended period of training as a nurse in the Lakeside Hospital. Years later she became the author of a history of surgery entitled Scalpel; and when her first novel with a medical background, The Town and Dr. Moore, was especially well-received both here and abroad, Mrs. Young decided to embark on a trilogy with the background of the history of surgery in the United States. I Swear By Apollo is the first volume of this projected series.' As you can see in the photos, the covers are exceptionally clean and have little to no wear, a bit of crinkling at the bottom edge of the spine. The corners and edges are in very good condition. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages, no binding issues. The pages are very clean and bright with one very minor exception. There is a very small brown spot on the bottom page edge and it just peeks over the bottom edge of the first 25 pages (very far from the print). I've provided a photograph of the title page so you can get a clear look at how tiny it is. The pages are in excellent condition. I don't see any turned-down or placeholder corner creases. The only crease I see is a light one at the top right corner of the last page, the About the Author page and the blank rear end paper. It's very minor. The inside covers and end papers are also very clean. The author is obviously quite engaged with her subject. The book runs 477 pages. You can see the dust jacket in the photos. It's very clean. It's wear is minor, slight scuffing at the spine ends along with a couple of tiny tears. There is one small tear off the bottom edge of the front. The rear cover is in very solid shape with just a little bit of scuffing off the bottom edge. The flaps are very clean (two specks on the front one) and in very good shape. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. It will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. Agatha Young was an author of novels and a teacher of fine arts. She was a graduate of the Cleveland School of Art and of Columbia University and l'Ecole Française in Paris. Her subjects of interest in her writings were extensive and included stage and costume design (she served on the faculty of Yale University in this field), the ballet, and the Civil War. In 1941 Miss Young was a consultant to the War Manpower Commission. At the time of the writing of this novel the author was living on Park Avenue in New York City. The last section of this book takes place in New York City and much of the historical research was done there. From the dust jacket: 'In this sympathetic and authentically detailed novel, the author of The Town and Dr. Moore again lovingly unfolds the story of a doctor, a young man starting his career in the closing days of the Civil War. A medical orderly to a battle where he Union Regiment, who inherits a small country practice in the town of Haddon, Vermont. He is twenty, without a medical degree.
