Inscribed by Dorland on front endpaper 'Miss Theo Nelson with the fondest regard of the author' and dated May 8, 1918; additionally autographed by Dorland on title page. The author was a major figure in modern medicine, editor of the 1898 'American Pocket Medical Dictionary' and the 1900 'American Illustrated Medical Dictionary,' both still in print -- retitled after him -- more than a century later. At the time he wrote 'The Sum of Feminine Achievement,' Dorland was professor of obstetrics at Loyola University and professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the Post-Graduate Medical College of Chicago.
