Item description from seller

Inscribed to Harry Beardsley. Clarence Darrow's Autobiography, Inscribed: Featuring the Massie Trial and Chicago Daily News Provenance Darrow, Clarence [1857-1938]. The Story of My Life. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1934. xiv, 495 pp. with fourteen plates. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt. A very good copy with spine ends and corners lightly bumped. Moderate toning to interior. Faint offsetting to endleaves and pp. 444-445 from laid-in newspaper clippings; a few leaves with folded corners and occasional marginal pencil notations. Inscribed by Darrow on the front free endpaper: "Inscribed to / Harry Beardsley / With all good wishes from / Clarence Darrow / Chicago Feb 26 - 1936." Includes a laid-in letter from Beardsley's son regarding the relationship between his father and Darrow. $650. * Later printing of the first edition, notably including the supplemental chapter on the Massie trial. This copy features a significant association provenance; Harry Beardsley was a prominent columnist and editor for the Chicago Daily News and a long-time acquaintance of Darrow. Their relationship was marked by "long, lively discussions" regarding Darrow's landmark legal crusades. Darrow remains the preeminent "attorney for the damned," famed for his defense in the Scopes "Monkey" Trial and the Leopold and Loeb case. Hunsberger, Clarence Darrow: A Bibliography 272.
