Item description from seller

Octavo. 98 pages. Hardcover bound in green cloth. The binding shows light to moderate rubbing and bumping. A sound copy with secure inner hinges. The gutter between the title page and the Contents page is cracking. The endpapers are foxed. Page 97 is blank (printer's error). INSCRIBED on the front flyleaf, "To Chas. O. McMichael from Hon. Chas. M. Stedman / February 8th, 1918". Charles Manly Stedman (1841-1930) was a Confederate officer, lawyer and Congressman from Pittsboro, North Carolina. In the Civil War he was part of the NC 44th Regiment as a regimental major and participated in numerous campaigns with the Army of Northern Virginia. He was wounded in the Wilderness Campaign, the battle at Spottsylvania Courthouse, and near Petersburg, and yet he was present at Bethel and at the Surrender at Appomattox. After the War, he practiced law and served in Congress. He was the director of the Guilford Battle Ground Company (1898-1917) and served in several other North Carolina organizations. In 1910 he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for the 62nd Congress and served nine terms, until his death (he was the last surviving Confederate Veteran to serve in Congress). His address at the unveiling of the Vance Statue appears on pages 66-82 of this volume. Charles O. McMIchael has been harder to pin down. We've found several people by that name, but we believe he was mentioned in an 1893 newspaper article (Charlotte Observer) as being present at the July 4th celebration at the Guilford Battle Ground (and unveiling of a monument there) "Shortly after 11 o'clock the line of march was formed at President Schenck's headquarters. Twenty mounted marshals, all splendid physical specimens, took the lead, dressed in Continental uniforms, under command of Chief Marshal Charles O. McMichael.".…
