First edition. 80 pages. Signed & inscribed by the author to the half-title page: "To Mrs Rice from Agatha Christie". The recipient was Phyllis Rice, the house-keeper at Greenway House in Devon, the summer and holiday home of Agatha Christie and her husband, Max Mallowan. Which was purchased by Christie & Max in 1938 and sold to her daughter, Rosalind Hicks in 1959, though continued to be used by her mother until her death. With the book are 3 letters from Christie to Rice, in their original envelopes, dating from the late 1960s and early 1970s, chatty and friendly in tone and signed using her married name, regarding their shared love of dogs, family matters and Christie congratulating Rice on a Premium Bonds win. Also, 3 letters from Christie's daughter, Rosalind, two detailed letters of engagement, in which she notes regarding Greenway House: "I think it is a happy place & I hope you won't regret it if you do agree to come", and a later letter addressed to Rice's son, Christopher, congratulating him on his forthcoming marriage. Also retained by Rice, and to accompany the book are 7 tattered, scruffy and stained notes, apparently from a noticeboard in Greenway House, some on Greenway headed paper, with notes to Rice in various hands, including some which appear to be scrawled by Christie, providing important addresses, instructions on feeding the dogs, telephone numbers and other requests, giving insight into daily life in the house. The book is firmly bound in dark green cloth, lettered in gilt over lighter green cloth covered boards, illustrated in white and dark green, the boards are quite bowed and lightly marked, and the extremities are a little bumped and rubbed. The text block is slightly marked and age toned, with minor spots of foxing. The dust jacket is the original and not price clipped, it is slightly marked, toned, rubbed and creased, with some minor nicks and short closed tears to the edges. A well provenanced inscribed Christie first edition, which comes with letters and ephemera that provide a glimpse of her domestic persona, rather than the image she cultivated in public life. Also giving an indication of the relationship between Christie and her only child, Rosalind towards the end of her life. The insight into life at Greenway House will also be of interest to Christie fans, as the estate was used as the basis for locations in several of her novels. …
