Item description from seller

Octavo. [6], 212, [2] pp. First edition, first printing. Signed and inscribed on the front free endpaper. As issued, in publisher's cloth with dust jacket. Spine a trifle sunned; pale green cloth is slightly mottled, otherwise Fine or nearly so; dust jacket with minor edgewear with some shallow chipping; a vertical crease up the spine; jacket is unclipped and unpriced; though there is the remains of an old bookseller's ticket on the top of the rear flap. This copy from the library of California collector Ingle Barr, with his bookplate on the front pastedown. Nathan has penned a substantive inscription to Barr on a preliminary blank: "For Ingle Barr, My first success. Turned down by Bobbs[-Merrill], and by Scribners; it was accepted by Knopf -- who printed 2500 copies. By the time they realized it was actually a best-seller, they had printed several more editions (all of 2500!) -- and FDR had called for a bank holiday! Robert Nathan." Additionally, with the signed bookplate of actor Jean Hersholt on the front pastedown. Though the jacket does not have a printed price, there is no mention of contemporary book club editions by Laurence. The jacket was issued in two states, the first was unacceptable to Nathan and it was destroyed (though examples exist) and reworked; we speculate that the price was perhaps an inadvertent casualty of this late revision. The provenance doesn't suggest a book club edition, either. Laurence A12.a.…
