Article on New Orleans being closed to U.S. shipping, which had led to great concern in the country, and the long article related to this, a re-publication from the Aurora, of The Mississippi, No. 1, a long anonymous article, signed Camillus, no doubt planted by Jefferson: It began: "for some weeks past the federal papers have teemed with inflammatory publications, evidently intended to dispose the people of the United States to hostility against France and Spain, on account of the proclamation of the Spanish intendant of New Orleans, and the reported cession of Louisiana to Spain. The commentary argued that the apparently mistaken act of one Spanish agent should not be a cause for war. Dismissing the "war whoop" heard from "various quarters," "Camillus" disparaged it as the language of "patricides" and "champions of murder." The commentary concluded, "No man but the callous hearted speculator in human affliction, he who calculates upon the plunder without partaking of the dangers or the miseries of war those who have in view the accumulation of fortune at the expense of the best blood of their fellow citizens and the ruin of the national prosperity, could advocate such doctrines." Also Publication of the anti-slavery act "An Act to Prevent the Importation of Certain Persons into Certain States, Where, by the Laws Thereof, Their Admission is Prohibited: February 28, 1803, signed by Jefferson as a continuation of the Slave Trade Act of 1794. A very good- copy with folds, about half a dozen small holes along folds affecting several words of text, some chips and tears along edges.
