Signed copy of Alan Watts' first book following the 32-page pamphletAn Outline of Zen Buddhismpublished in 1932.The Spirit of Zen,published when Watts was just 21 years old, was an early attempt to interpret and explain the origins of Zen Buddhism for a Western audience. This concise treatise remains one of the most clear-cut explanations of Zen and laid the intellectual groundwork for Watts' later role as the most important popularizer of Eastern philosophy in the English-speaking world. This copy is signed by Watts in his early style, and incredibly scarce thus; a cornerstone of Western Zen literature. 17x12cm, [5], 136pp plus [4]pp publisher's ads at rear. Beautifully signed by Watts on the title page below his printed name. Yellow cloth boards with black lettering and vignette illustration on front cover in illustrated jacket. Boards a touch foxed around edges and with scattered marginal foxing, mainly to first 1/3 or so of the page block. Former owner's gift inscription to ffep. Jacket with foxing and light chipping at spine ends. A very good example of a scarce book. …
