About this Item
First Edition (Scribner 'A' on the copyright page. Here's another signed novel by Hugh Fosburgh, his third (I recently listed his first). Once listed, it will be the Only signed copy for sale on the Internet. It's beginning to feel like he only signed and inscribed books to his relatives. This inscription reads: 'To Cousin Clopkins, with one dollar (and then he puts a line through 'one dollar'), love, and affection, from Cousin Hugh.' Above the inscription a previous owner affixed a label, you can see it all in the second photograph. You can also see the covers. They are unusual. I don't see any staining or soiling. There's a little crinkling at the spine ends. The edges and corners look very good just some very light rubbing. The spine does have moderate forward lean, but the book is solidly bound from cover to cover. The pages are nicely tight and the covers are nicely tight as well. The pages are mostly clean. I found one with a light stain off its top edge reaching down over a few words in the first two sentences, not impacting the reading of the words. I saw a few with a small tan spot, are a couple of tan spots at their margin, and one with a spot just off its top corner, not reaching the print. That's about it. I didn't see any creasing on any of the pages. The front flap of the dust jacket at some point in time had two pieces of tape that I guess were used to hold the front flap down against the front inside cover, the odd things people do. So there are two little remnants on the front inside cover and two on the front flap (again see second photo). There's also a shadow of the remnants on the signed front end paper facing the front inside cover. This tape thing was not repeated on the rear cover/rear flap. The inside covers and end papers are otherwise in very good shape, quite clean. Beside the previous owner's label, there are no attachments. There are no markings. And the author's signed inscription is the only writing to be found in the book. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. I've always had it in a fitted protective cover. The front cover looks very nice with just a tiny loss at its top corner. The rear cover looks similarly nice, but you can see a little bit of the loss that spoils the niceness at the top edge of the spine. It doesn't reach the lettering. There's a little scuffing at the bottom edge of the spine with a very tiny loss. The front flap has the two tape marks, but is otherwise in nice condition. The rear flap has some wear at its top edge, including a sliver of loss. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. Here is some of the effusive praise that the publisher included on the front flap: 'The Sound of Whitewater is the story of a canoe trip down the river, over hazardous rapids, along slow lazy stretches, through quiet pools. The background is the big woods north country of upper New York State in the full tide of glorious June. Here is a novel so unusual it baffles description, a novel that will make a strong appeal to anyone who loves good writing and the out-of-doors. The book has a wonderful rhythm, very much like the rhythm of the river itself: slow at times, then speeding up, then idling along. But it can't be described. If you want to know what it is, you'll have to read it. Then you too will share in the excitement and the fun, and in the beauty and marvel of wild woods and waters and living things depicted with a knowledge, a truth and a passion found only in writing of the first order-- a renewing experience of pure or disinterested happiness and bodily delight.'.
