About this Item

Description:

Very rare original 1889 inscribed 1st edition of Rebecca Ruter Springer's poetry book "Songs by the Sea." The book is overall in very good condition with just some minor signs of wear and age. There is an inscription on the front blank flyleaf from the author to her husband Mr. W. [William] Springer. Below that is a later inscription from Ruter H. Springer (the author's son) to his "dear friend Mrs. George Judd, for her natural life," after which the book was to be returned back to him. The front pastedown also has a small bookplate to the top corner belonging to Ruter H. Springer and his wife Gertrude Lynch Springer. The book is bound in cushioned leather covers. The covers have some mild wear with a couple of light vertical indentation marks to the cushioned leather of the front cover. The binding is good and sound. The interior is mostly nice and clean, with just the occasional page with a light bit of foxing or grubbiness. Along with that there may be the very occasional page with some kind of other minor imperfection, such as a tiny chip or tear, creased page corner, minor stain or marking, minor interior crack, etc. Generally though, it's a nice copy. The book measures approximately 8 inches by 7 inches and is 169 pages long with some nice black and white illustrations. Please look at all the photos to further note the condition.
