From the Publisher
Dallas Morning Star Review - August 1999 ". . . a literary rarity: a Vietnam War combat novel that aims high and succeeds. Adding to its rarefied status is the fact that only a smattering of non-pulp Vietnam War fictions has been published in recent years. The few serious novels and short stories that have appeared lately deal with the war in flashback, focusing instead on its domestic aftermath. Mr. Mort, who served three decades ago as a radio operator with the 1st Calvary Division in Vietnam, uses the opposite approach in this well-crafted, finely honed novel, his first. He sets most of the action in Vietnam during protagonist Jimmy Patrick Donnelly's eventful year as an infantryman. The author weaves into that compelling story flashbacks to Jimmy's childhood and prewar young adulthood and flashes forward to his life after coming home. In spare--at times elegant -- prose, Mr. Mort spins out a haunting tale filled with fully drawn, memorable characters, pitch-perfect dialogue and dead-on evocations of Jimmy's experiences at home and in Vietnam. The writer is at his best drawing pulsatingly real world portraits of the physical and emotional terrain in Vietnam . . . deserves a place among the most accomplished Vietnam War literary novels - Marc Leepson, book editor and columnist for the VVA Veteran Dallas Morning Star Review - August 1999 " . . . a literary rarity: a Vietnam War combat novel that aims high and succeeds.
