Add to basketHartford: John C. Wells, 1842. First edition, a presentation copy: "Rev. Geo Howe, D.D., (more initials, illegible) with respects of the author". Original brown cloth, gilt lettered, decorated in blind, 201 pages, with a lengthy Errata list at the end. Old penciled corrections for every error on the list. Murdock (1776-1856) had been a professor at the Andover Theological Seminary until his retirement in 1829. This book was "Essentially a genealogy of Idealist philosophy" from Kant through Fichte, Schelling, Jacobi, and Hegel - it was "remarkable how thoroughly and lucidly it introduces so potentially abstruse a topic." In his chapter on "American Transcendentalism" he credited "Victor Cousin, not Coleridge, Thomas Carlyle, or any of the Germans directly as the main inspiration of the early American transcendentalists. (Philip Gura, "American Transcendentalism, a History", 2007). Rev. George Howe (1802-1883), was educated at Andover. He was professor at the Theological Seminary at Columbia, South Carolina, from 1825 until his death. Two old bookplates on the pastedown, "D.J. Brimm" printed plate obscuring the lower half of an older plate, "Theological Seminary, Presented by Rev. Dr. George Howe.". Moderate shipping to spine ends; light foxing, except heavier on the binder's leaves; a roundish hole on the front free endpaper, an inch in diameter, underneath the presentation inscription. A Very Good copy.
