Add to basketFirst printing. With the ownership signature of Harrison B. Tordoff at the top of the half-title page. A nice association copy, as Tordoff was a prominent ornithologist and conservationist. He was the head of the Bell Museum of Natural History at the University of Minnesota. A finch expert, he was also dedicated to the conservation of the endangered Kirtland's warbler and, especially, peregrine falcons. He was responsible for the reintroduction of peregrines to the upper Mississippi River region via the Midwest Peregrine Restoration Project which he founded. He helped hatch more than 1,200 peregrine chicks. Peregrines were of course the unfortunate poster bird for species that declined due to eggshell thinning from DDT, the pernicious chemical that is the subject ofSilent Spring. For a full biography of Tordoff, see the tribute from Tordoff's former student, the famous ornithologist Frank Gill. Green cloth boards, gold lettering, yellow top stain, patterned endpapers. First printing stated. With drawings by Louis and Lois Darling. Near fine with just a little rubbing to board edges and spine ends. In a very good jacket with some edge wear and shallow chipping, especially to top of spine and either side of spine. Some faint red discoloration on rear panel from rubbing. But a working copy of someone important in the field.
