Offered here is a signed true first edition, first printing of Advanced War Games by the legendary Donald F. Featherstone, published in 1969 by Stanley Paul & Co. Ltd., London. Widely regarded as one of the pioneers of historical miniature wargaming, Featherstone helped transform tabletop wargaming from a niche pastime into the sophisticated hobby enjoyed by enthusiasts around the world today. Advanced War Games represents one of his most influential works, expanding on the concepts introduced in his earlier publications and presenting more realistic, tactical, and historically grounded methods of recreating battles. What makes this copy particularly desirable is the author's presentation inscription and signature on the front free endpaper, making it an attractive collector's piece as well as an important reference work for military historians and wargaming enthusiasts. Written for experienced wargamers seeking greater realism without unnecessary complexity, Featherstone explores a wide range of advanced gaming concepts, including: Alternative methods of resolving combat beyond traditional dice rolling. Commander quality and battlefield leadership. Logistics and supply. Morale and battlefield psychology. Weather effects and battlefield engineering. Minefields and defensive positions. Solo wargaming systems. Multi-player battles and campaign games. Historical scenarios and tactical realism. The book is illustrated throughout with photographic plates depicting model battlefields, miniature armies, military vehicles, and historical recreations. Condition: A Good to very good copy. The original green cloth boards remain clean and well preserved with light rubbing to the extremities, minor bumping to the corners, and slight fraying at the head of the spine. Silver lettering to the spine remains bright and clear. The binding is firm, tight and square with no loose pages. The contents are clean and bright throughout with light age toning consistent with age. No significant foxing, annotations, or underlining have been found. The front free endpaper bears a presentation inscription signed by Donald F. Featherstone, adding significant collector appeal. No dust jacket. Store description
Step into the world of Cranston & Perry, where every shelf holds a little history and every book has a story beyond the one printed on its pages. We seek out books with character, from time-worn editions with foxed pages, beautiful bindings and forgotten inscriptions, to collectable children’s books, literary classics, unusual finds and modern voices worth rediscovering. Some are rare. Some are wonderfully ordinary. Some have travelled through generations before reaching us. What matters is that each deserves to find the right reader and a new place on the shelf. Part antiquarian bookseller, part treasure hunter and entirely devoted to books, Cranston & Perry celebrates literature in all its forms: beautiful, rebellious, curious, scholarly, nostalgic and occasionally rather strange. Every book has a past. Every reader begins another chapter. We simply bring the two together.…
