The frontispiece map shows the route of the South Pacific Railroad from St. Louis to the southwestern border of the state, and is indexed to each of the 14 sectional maps. The latter maps are plotted and numbered, with lands owned by the SPRR shaded and the sold tracts in red. The present promotional pamphlet, selling Missouri lands owned by the railroad, was issued by the SPRR when under the ownership of Clinton B. Fisk, who has signed the work in print on p. 12. The SPRR was formed in 1868 after the failure of Fremont's Southwest Pacific Railroad; it would later become part of the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad, before being consumed by the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway.
