About this Item
1889. First edition. ix, 388pp. John Stuart Blackie (1809-1895) was a Scottish scholar and man of letters. After attending classes at Edinburgh University (1825-1826) he spent three years at Aberdeen as a student of theology, and in 1829 he went to Germany. The years spent abroad extinguished his former wish to enter the Church, and at his father's desire he gave himself up to the study of law. Scottish nationality was another source of enthusiasm with him; and in this connection he displayed real sympathy with highland home life and the grievances of the crofters. He produced a considerable amount of literary work, usually on classical or Scottish subjects, including some poems and songs of no mean order. This study of Scottish song has been divided into the following seven chapters: Scottish Song, its Value and Significance; Songs of Love, Courtship, and Marriage; Patriotic Songs, War Songs, Jacobite Ballads; Songs of Character and Incident in Daily Life; Drinking-songs, Convivial Songs; Sea-Songs, Naval Songs, and Boat-Songs; Songs of Thought and Sentiment. There is also a glossary. The book is bound in the original pinkish-brown cloth covered bevelled boards with gold titling on the spine and a small gold illustration on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling on the boards and spine. There is wear to the cloth on the corner tips and the spine ends are bumped with a little bit of damage to the cloth at the top of the spine. The titling on the spine is worn. The contents are tight and clean with some foxing to the back of the first free endpaper, the second front free endpaper and last page of the book. The author has inscribed the second front free endpaper thus: "To Mr G. Adam Smith with Pleasant reminiscences of a Free Church sermon at Pitlochry on Sunday 27th Sept.1893 from John S. Blackie." Below this are two words written in Greek by the same hand. Sir George Adam Smith 1856-1942, was minister at Queen's Cross Free Church Aberdeen 1882-1892, professor at Free Church College Glasgow 1892-1909, Principal of the University of Aberdeen1909-1935 and a notable Old Testament scholar. He was an ex-student of Blackie's Greek class at Edinburgh University. Seller Inventory # gScotLitBlack06
