ABOUT THE AUTHORS Lois MacIntyre Darling (August 15, 1917 - December 19, 1989) was an American author, zoologist, illustrator and researcher. She was also an accomplished yachtswoman. During the second World War Darling worked for the U.S. Navy where she combined her artistic skills and her interest in sailing by creating models of warships. In 1946 she met and married her husband, Louis Darling, which launched a lifelong collaboration. Both also worked independently too. He worked in children's books, and she created illustrations which included covers for the magazine Yachting. Louis Darling, Jr. (April 26, 1916 - January 21, 1970) was an American illustrator, writer, and environmentalist, best known for illustrating the Henry Huggins series and other children's books written by Beverly Cleary. He and his wife Lois provided illustrations for the first edition of Silent Spring. Darling wrote and illustrated The Gull's Way, a book about American herring gulls on an island in Maine, which was published in 1965. To research it, he had camped alone on the uninhabited island for six weeks, observing and photographing the gulls. The book won the John Burroughs Medal in 1966. CONDITION REPORT The book is in NEAR FINE condition: rubbing to extremities and foxing on text block edges else FINE. The dust jacket is VG+ - all flap corners are slightly clipped (but jacket is not price clipped). Some light edge wear creasing, chipping and a few very small tears. Spine is sun-lightened and some light dust soiling to rear panel. Overall, an uncommon book by award winning author-illustrators with its SCARCE dust jacket. Signed by the authors.
