About this Item

Dark green cloth with sharp decorative gilt sheep pattern on front and decorative gilt to spine. Gilt edges. First free endpaper is an original hand drawn colour illustration by Thomson with perosonalized inscription, dated Dec 1906. The first of the Cranford series to include colour plates this edition includes 15 colour plates plus frontis with tissue guards and 35 b&w illustrations throughout the text. Two pages of publisher's advertisements for books illustrated by Hugh Thomson at rear. Slight wear to edges with corners bumped and two small stains on back. Tear in cloth on front hinge at head of spine. Partially cracked rear endpaper. Inside very clean and tight with slight browning to edges. Housed in green quarter bound leather and cloth clamshell box with five raised bands, red title and author/illustrator stamped labels and decorative gilt to spine. A very good copy with a one of a kind author colour illustration.
