Inscribed by Lorenz Graham on the half-title. This first in a series of novels for young adults spanning 15 years in the life of their protagonist, David Williams, whom readers first meet as a 15-year-old in the rural south of the 1950s. South Town chronicles a dangerous summer for David, when an act of heroism backfires under the constant pressure caused by the bigotry and Jim Crow laws that control his daily life. Born in New Orleans, the writer, folklorist, and educator Lorenz Graham (1902-89) is credited with helping pave the way for the development of contemporary African American literature for children. Octavo. Original tan cloth binding, with brown titles. The dust jacket, which reproduces a painting by Ernie Crichlow, is a bit toned along the extremities with some minor wear to the corners and tips; else very good or better. Seller Inventory # 76672
