About this Item
Good (some wear covers; contents clean & tight). 8vo., printed gray wraps; 65 pages Rare First Edition. Signed "Anna [Nugent?] Atwater Law" at the bottom of the front endpaper. A rare book of poetry about the area and people of the Wyoming Valley of Pennsylvania. The Wyoming Valley is a historic industrialized region of Northeastern Pennsylvania. The region is historically notable for its influence in helping fuel the American Industrial Revolution with its many anthracite coal mines. The author's grandfather, Archibald Faulkender Law [1799-1848], immigrated from Scotland in 1830 where he was the overseer of coal and lead mine operations for the Duke of Buccleuch. He reported introduced shaft mining in the Wyoming Valley area and a monument to him was placed at the head of an abandoned coal mine in Carbondale, PA. Poems deal with various subjects, including World War One, coal, and various other subjects. The Wyoming Valley was also the scene of a Revolutionary War battle. The state of Wyoming may have been named after this valley. The book is rare and obviously had a very small printing. Seller Inventory # 58338
