Grey illustrated dust jacket lettered red and black. Text in German. Presentation copy: 'To Fifs with love Walter H. Nessler.' A variety of exhibition catalogues and cards loosely inserted which are as follows: seven original handmade coloured cards (chiefly christmas and birthday cards) four signed by Nessler and three inscribed and signed Horst [Walter Nessler] and Erica; 2 original handmade coloured cards, one inscribed to Fifi and signed Judy and Conrad (see below), dated 1980 the other also possibly by Conrad. One envelope inscribed 'To Felicity'. Alwin Gallery exhibition catalogue (shared with sculptor Ivor Thomas) entitled 'The Colourful World of Walter Nessler. Polyester Paintings', 8pp. Card covers. 1965; one Contemporary Art, Lisa Widemann, Mainburg printed exhibition card with a handwritten message that reads, 'Dearest Fifs, shall report when I come back to London, Love Horst.' Gallery Petit, London exhibition card 'Polyester Paintings 1960-1970' with portrait of Nessler and list of his exhibitions. Folded A4 sheet of paper with an illustration and a biography of Nessler. Ernst Toller (1893 Ğ 1939) was a left-wing playwright and revolutionary who was imprisoned for five years for high treason, during this time he wrote some of his most successful plays. His books were targeted during the book burnings of 1933. Forced into exile, he ended his life in America. Das Schwalbenbuch (The Swallow-Book) is a poetic-play first published in 1924. The German artist Walter Horst Nessler (1912 Ğ 2001) moved to England in the 1930s to avoid Nazi repression. he was famous for a savage satire on Hitler published as 'Das Hitler ABC'. His first marriage was to Prudence Ashbee, the daughter of C.R. Ashbee, the Arts and Crafts architect and designer. They had one child, a son named Conrad. After the war Nessler went to Paris where he mixed with Cocteau, Sartre, Picasso, Giacometti and Matisse. He then studied sculpture with Elizabeth Frink at St Martin's School of Art and later taught there and elsewhere. His first marriage was dissolved in 1946 and he married Erica Ulman in 1953. Felicity Ashbee aka Fifs or Fifi (1913 Ğ 2008) was Nessler's sister-in-law. She was an artist, designer and teacher who created posters for famine relief during the Spanish Civil War. In later life she wrote a biography of her mother, Jane Felicity Ashbee. A couple of small tears to dust jacket, otherwise very good. 376632103X Light wear to dust jacket otherwise very good.
