v, [6] - 179, [1 (blank)] pp. 8vo. 8-7/8" x 5-3/4" This a loose English translation of "Bertrand et Raton, ou l'Art de Conspirer". as the preface [by Duer?] notes, "It is a 'refacciamento' in English." Duer was a prominent New York attorney, jurist, and co-founder of Children's Village. This copy with a note to the ffep [by Duer's recipient?] identifying Duer as the translator: "Translated by Hon John Duer while confined by illness at London in the summer of 1838." Until this copy surfaced, it was not generally known that Duer had translated the work, a literary discovery that remains little known even today. General wear to binding. Some foxing & browing. Prior owner inscription to ffep. A couple leaves loose at front. Withal, a VG copy. Original publishers green cloth spine over printed blue-paper boards 1st Edition in English (American Imprints 40-6036). INSCRIBED PRESENTATION copy, with Duer's signature on the t.p. upper margin.
