1938 first edition copy of The Romantic Ballet in Lithographs of the Time by Cyril W. Beaumont and Sacheverell Sitwell. The Romantic Ballet in Lithographs of the Time is an inter-war production celebrated for capturing an entire historical era of dance. Cyril W. Beaumont owned a famed dance bookshop on Charing Cross Road in London. There he met Sir Sacheverell Sitwell—a prominent baronet, art critic, and member of the famous literary Sitwell family. Their combined expertise produced this specialized catalog. The text meticulously details the golden era of the Romantic ballet from 1832 to 1849. This timeframe starts with the premiere of La Sylphide and marks the rise of the ballerina, the introduction of the tutu, and early pointework. The volume contains 81 full-page tipped-in plates. Nine of these plates feature vibrant stenciled colors. They capture the legendary prima ballerinas of the 19th century, including Marie Taglioni, Fanny Elssler, Carlotta Grisi, and Fanny Cerrito. The text pages are printed on distinct, textured grey handmade paper. The top edges of the pages are gilded (top edge gilt), while the other page edges are left rough and uncut (deckle edges) as a sign of artisan manufacturing. Features the beautiful rose/pink damask-patterned fabric binding with a colored title label on the spine. Signed by authors on pgs 55 an 101. Very good condition. Spine shows shelf fading. Mylar dust jacket.…
