FIRST EDITION. 8vo, 199 x 125 mms., pp. [x], 213 [214 - 219 index, 220 blank], including half-title, early 19th century half vellum, marbled boards, gilt spine, red morocco label; text lightly foxed throughout, ex-library, with a library stamp on title-page, but a very good copy. OCLC asserts in its listing that this is an Italian version of Reflexions critiques sur les différentes écoles de peinture, which is, of course a work by Jean-Baptise Dubos (1670 -1742) and whose religious and philosophical principles were quite the oppositE of those of .Jean-Baptiste de Boyer, Marquis d'Argens (1704 - 1771). The only North American copy of this book that I found is at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champagne, which names the Marquis d'Argens as the author. Even with my limited Italian, derived mostly from Italian operas and cookery, it is clear to me that the book is not by d'Argens, but is in fact a commentary on his critical reflections on Father Dubos' work, and not an Italian translation of d'Argens' work of 1743, Réflexions historiques et eritiques sur le goût et sur les ouvrages des principaux auteurs anciens et modernes. The present work is dedicated to Cardinal Silvio Valenti [Gonzaga], who was born in 1690 and died in 1756; as a dedicated opponent of the Catholic Church, d'Argens seems an unlikely person to dedicate any book to a Catholic Cardinal. The dedication is signed by "V. E," and the initials also appear in the dedicatory epistle. The dedication concludes with a testimonial by Venanzio Monaldini, though is unlikely the publisher born in 1765. The address following the dedication is to the academicians of S. Luca di Roma. Francesca Algarotti was one of several authors who critizied the work, in his Saggiio sopra la Pittura(1756) OCLC locates four copies: Jacques Doucet Library, Bibliotheque d'Art et d'Archeologie (2), and Illinois Urbana-Champaign, but there are also copies in Columbia, Yale, UCLA, and Harvard; and probably others that I have missed. Rare first edition of this spirited defense of the superiority of Italian painting by the archaeologist and antiquary Venuti, attacking the highly controversial Réflexions critiques sur les différentes écoles de Peinture (1751), of the Marquis d'Argens, which attempted to argue for the superiority of French over Italian and Flemish/Dutch art. Of interest for the history of taste in mid-eighteenth century Rome. Seller Inventory # 2877
