First edition. Octavo. 300pp., frontispiece. Very slightly rubbed, fine copy lacking the scarce dust jacket. Nicely Signed by Wesley with a sentiment. Biography of Allen (1760-1831), a former slave who founded the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Philadelphia, the first church of that distinct religious denomination, and who was the co-founder of the Philadelphia Free African Society. Wesley, an important historian, was a dean at Howard University and later the first president of Ohio's Wilberforce State College (now known as Central State College). Very scarce signed by Wesley.
