Item description from seller

A Multi-Generational Family and Military Archive (1826-1945) featuring the folio scrapbook of Rev. Edward Walwyn Foley (1809-1899) and WWII papers of Lieut. W. N. Bailey, Royal Artillery. This unique archive tracks over 120 years of continuous family history. The core is a large biographical manuscript scrapbook (37cm tall) belonging to prominent Victorian clergyman and educational reformer Rev. Edward Walwyn Foley, M.A. It is augmented by loose WWII military release papers, an original portrait photo, and birth records of his descendant, Lieut. William Neville Bailey. The folio binding contains tipped-in legal documents, vellum and heavy paper certificates with intact episcopal wax seals, handwritten correspondence, and newspaper columns. Part I documents the Oxford academic years of E. W. Foley from 1826 to 1831. It contains a run of rare academic ephemera from Wadham College, Oxford, including his 1826 Latin matriculation slip signed by Vice-Chancellor R. Jenkyns, his signed institutional Oath of Admission (1827), and four separate printed exam passes for Responsions and Literis Humanioribus, hand-signed by Oxford figures J. A. Cramer and R. D. Hampden. The archive tracks his early career as the very first Incumbent of Holy Trinity, Tewkesbury (1837-1849). The scrapbook contains a complete legal trio of documents for this parish launch, including the Bishop's original Institution Certificate featuring a handwritten correction changing the printed text from the King to the newly coronated Queen Victoria. It also holds his signed Declaration of Conformity and public Reading-In Memorandum. Accompanying these is a public Valedictory Farewell Address from April 1849 signed by dozens of prominent Tewkesbury townspeople, alongside Rev. Foley's actual handwritten, heavily edited draft response letter. His subsequent civic leadership in Derby (1849-1872) is recorded with another complete three-part legal archive for his installation as Perpetual Curate of All Saints, Derby (now Derby Cathedral). This includes a rare signature panel of parish churchwardens featuring industrial publisher William Bemrose. Newspaper clippings detail Foley's impact, including his public dedication prayer at the laying of the foundation stone for the New Market Hall (1864) and his election victory to the first Derby School Board (1871) under the Elementary Education Act. This section is complemented by an original handwritten Letter of Regret from the School Board upon his 1872 resignation, unanimously supported by local Congregationalist and Roman Catholic clergy, showing cross-denominational civic respect. His final years track his appointment to the Rectory of Jevington, Sussex, presented by the Duke of Devonshire. The 1899 birthday and obituary section features an extraordinarily rare, intact original Post Office Telegram dated August 2, 1899, sent from All Saints, Derby, to Foley's residence in Hailsham, celebrating his 90th birthday. The volume concludes with local obituaries detailing his death at Eastbourne on July 7, 1899, and his funeral at St. Mary's Church. 20th-century Lieut. W. N. Bailey papers (1908-1945). Loosely inserted in a dedicated envelope, this collection includes the original certified birth certificate for William Neville Bailey, born December 30, 1908, in Aston, Birmingham. Alongside is a crisp studio portrait photograph of Bailey as a young man from the 1920s-1930s. Finally, it features an original letter from the British War Office bearing an embossed red Royal Coat of Arms seal. Dated October 19, 1945, the letter officially releases Lieut. W. N. Bailey of the Royal Artillery from active duty following his service during WWII, granting him the honorary rank of Lieutenant. This archive seamlessly blends 19th-century church history, elite Oxford ephemera, local British genealogy (Gloucestershire, Derbyshire, Warwickshire, Sussex), and WWII military history into one line of ironclad family provenance.…
