About this Item
Small 4to. Hardcover. Pp 225. Very good condition. Dust-jacket has light scuffs and shelf-wear, with mild creasing around the edges. The pages themselves are clean and unmarked. Includes black and white illustrations and photographs. First Edition. Signed by the author, Sir Kenneth Clark. The familiar subject of Rembrandt is treated here from a new point of view. Sir Kenneth Clark, who is an authority on the Italian Renaissance, has long been a student of Rembrandt, and has recognized for the first time the full extent to which he was influenced by the great Italians of the fifteenth and early sixteenth century. Not only did Rembrandt borrow motives and pictorial ideas from artists of that period, but his whole style derived from them an increased range and dignity. Clark shows once more his power of making us look imaginatively at works of art and share to some extent the artist's experience. It's this very skill which made such remarkable works with his earlier 'Landscape Into Art' and 'The Nude'. Seller Inventory # 036350
