From the Back Cover
Reflections is very much a defence of the quality and performance of the allied front line infantry involved in this fighting. This involvement has, to Charles Farrell's deepening sense of injustice, drawn criticism from several contemporary writers, who have suggested or implied that the formations were a 'flawed instrument' in the hands of their Commander-in-Chief. These views have prompted this book and Charles Farrell's keen defence of the ground troops in North West Europe is sharp and authoritative, with a clear understanding of the strategic issues. The professionalism and bravery of the British, Canadian and American infantry in their attacks against better equipped German Divisions cannot fail to leave a lasting impression on any reader.
