SIGNED BY WILLIAM HENRY WELCH, to whom Newsholme and Kingsbury dedicated their book: "Dear Mrs. Eliasberg/ I am glad that/ you like 'Red Medicine'. It seems to me/ very readable and informing and presents/ a picture of medicine and public health/ in Soviet Russia which offers an ex-/ ample to other countries/ W. H. Welch." Welch has inscribed this copy on the dedication page. The printed dedication by Newsholme and Kingsbury reads: "To Doctor William Henry Welch the Nestor of the Medical Profession in America, who first suggested the investigation which is concluded by this volume; and to the memory of Lady (Sara) Newsholme who gave essential help throughout its pursuit." "In 1922, a medical social worker named Hortense Kahn Eliasberg sought to open a home where children could recuperate from illness and surgery. Thanks to her efforts, the Happy Hills Convalescent Home for Children [now the Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital] opened later that year in a colonial-style house in northwest Baltimore" (online information). She was married to Louis Eliasberg, a financier who formed the greatest American coin collection of all time (Wikipedia). In her autobiography, "Exploring the Dangerous Trades" (1943), Alice Hamilton writes of William Henry Welch and this book by Newsholme and Kingsbury: "I saw him [Welch] for the last time some three months before his death in Johns Hopkins Hospital [Welch died April 30, 1934]. He was deeply absorbed in a description he had just read of the anti-tuberculosis work which Soviet Russia was carrying on and which John Kingsbury and Sir Arthur Newholme had just written up. There was not a trace of anti-Bolshevist prejudice and skepticism in his attitude--only warn admiration and even envy" (pp. 51-52).
