G. Sebald, portray two intertwining dreamtimes: Moscow and the provinces. Hoyer's glimpses of timeless moments of reflection, hope and doubt at the edges of history are not mere mementoes but images in which the daydreams of her subjects seem to leave their mark on the paper. The book is divided into segments of black and white 35mm photographs, the product of quiet voyages to Central Asian cities, Caspian beaches, Arctic outskirts and faded Ukrainian anytowns (awarded with the Leica-Oskar-Barnack-Prize), and medium format color images that crystallize the intensity of Moscow in winter. Page by page the reader is given fragments of a journey that place themselves in the memory as if the reader half-remembers making it. In the exquisite light of Hoyer's pictures, raw from the Siberian sky, dazzling on a Moscow street or attenuated by sea fog, there is an unsettling equality of elements: dogs and men become alike in wistfulness, butterflies and buildings share a common fragility. Hoyers Momentaufnahmen zeitloser Betrachtungen, von Zweifel und Hoffnung an den Rändern der Geschichte, sind nicht nur Mahnzeichen, sondern Bilder, in denen die Tagträume ihrer Objekte auf dem Papier Spuren zu hinterlassen scheinen. Das Buch ist in verschiedene Abschnitte eingeteilt: Eine Sequenz mit 35-mm-Schwarz-Weiß-Fotografien dokumentiert Reisen in entlegene zentralasiatische Städte, zu Stränden am Kaspischen Meer, an die Peripherie der Arktis und zu ukrainischen, dem Niedergang anheimgefallenen Städten (prämiert mit dem Leica-Oskar-Barnack-Preis). Ein anderes Kapitel zeigt Farbfotografien im Mittelformat, die die Intensität des winterlichen Moskaus einfrieren. Der Betrachter bekommt Seite für Seite derart einprägsame Fragmente einer Reise vermittelt, dass er fast glauben könnte, er sei selbst dabei gewesen. Im bestechenden Licht von Hoyers Fotografien hart unter sibirischem Himmel, grell flirrend in einer Moskauer Straße oder nebelverhangen am Meer ist eine beunruhigende Ebenbürtigkeit der Elemente auszumachen: Hunde und Männer werden gleichermaßen von Schwermut erfasst und sowohl Schmetterlingen als auch Gebäuden haftet eine gewisse Fragilität an. About the Author:

Andrea Hoyer (born 1967 in Göttingen, Germany) is a German-American photographer. In 2003 she won the Leica Oskar Barnack Award.
Andrea Hoyer took a degree in Oriental Studies at Columbia University in New York City. She received her photographic training at the New York International Center for Photography (ICP), among other places. Hoyer lives in New York and Ammerland, Germany.

James Meek (born 1962) is a British writer and journalist. He was born in London and grew up in Dundee, Scotland.
Meek spent several years living in the former Soviet Union in the 1990s and now resides in London. He has published four novels and two short story collections. In 2004 he was named Foreign Correspondent and Amnesty Journalist of The Year. His third novel, The People's Act of Love (2005), received significant critical acclaim and went on to win the Scottish Arts Council Book of Year Award and the Ondaatje Prize. It has been translated into twenty languages. His fourth novel, We Are Now Beginning Our Descent (2008) won the Prince Maurice prize.
A film version of The People's Act of Love adapted by Johnny Depp is in development.
