About this Item
Inscribed in the year of publication on the front free endpaper by William F. Kimes, who provides the introduction here and was Muir's main bibliographer: "Every good wish to the Elvira and Carroll on this memorable meeting of the Moxon Chapel, William F. Kimes, November 2, 1974." This slim volume collects two previously uncollected Muir pieces: "The Central Palin," which was his second-ever magazine article (though Kimes asserts it may have been written first), published inOld and Newin 1872; and "The Hetch Hetchy Valley," his fourth column in a newspaper, originally published in 1873 in Boston's Weekly Transcript. Thus the book presents these essays again just after their hundredth anniversary. With a two-page chronology of Muir's life at rear. A very handsome fine press production in turquoise cloth boards with a conifer cone illustration and gold lettering on the spine. About 45 pages. Just fifty copies were printed for Kimes by Grant Dahlstrom at the Castle Press, Pasadena. This is copy 11. Uncommon signed by Kimes, with no other signed copies currently available. "Moxon Chapel" in the inscription seems to refer to a group of printers (actually "Moxon Chappel") in the Bay Area. Also laid in is a holiday photo card from "Maymie and Bill [Kimes], Rocking K Ranch," which explains the name Kimes chose for the press.
