The Author John Irving was an officer serving in the Royal Navy from 1914 to 1945. "The sea has a language of its own which I deem worthy of preservation. It is the unbreakable link between seamen. The sailor lives a life so much apart from his fellow men, a life of journeyings and wanderings, of strange places and strange tongues. To-day, in Mess Deck and Ward Room there are phrases in common daily use which span the centuries. The speed of modern sea life has a tendency to brush some of those older expressions from the seaman's tongue but they contrive to linger on in the background.
