Item description from seller

BOOK DESCRIPTION: 12mo. Original brown printed cover with string tied binding. Privately printed. With author’s inscription and manuscript notes. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Near fine condition with minor shelf soiling. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: The author was a private in Company D, 49th Massachusetts Infantry. The 49th was composed of men from Berkshire County, and recruits from Sheffield and the town of Lenox formed Company D. Here Deland describes his personal experiences during the siege of Port Hudson in the spring and summer of 1863. The 49th Massachusetts left Camp Banks as part of the expedition on May 21, and they saw its first combat before the day was out as Union forces just outside of Baton Rouge encountered rebel forces from Port Hudson precipitating the Battle of Plains Store. During this engagement, Union troops succeeded in cutting off the last route of escape from Port Hudson. On the advance on Port Hudson, Louisiana the author was awarded the Medal of Honor for his action during the siege on May 27, 1863; "Volunteered in response to a call and, under a heavy fire from the enemy, advanced and assisted in filling with fascines a ditch which presented a serious obstacle to the troops attempting to take the works of the enemy by assault." This privately printed narrative, likely printed in a small number, is very scare, not included in Dornbusch, and seldom offered for sale. Nice presentation copy to Massachusetts U.S. Senator W. Murray Crane, and with manuscript note; obscure publication, rarely offered for sale.
