He soon volunteered and raised a company G of the 32nd Ohio Infantry regiment. In December 1862 the governor had him recruit and establish the 9th Ohio Cavalry regiment. In January 1863, four companies mustered in at Zanesville and organized as the 1st Battalion. The remaining eight companies were mustered into service in late 1863; the regiment was finally completed and united in Alabama in early 1864. “As a regiment the Ninth Ohio Cavalry, which belonged to the Army of the West, operated most of the time under general orders on its own responsibility. Often stationed quite in advance of the infantry, we were thus brought into close touch with the Southern people, and as a result dislikes on both sides were very much modified.” (Preface). Hamilton, initially promoted to major, earned promotions to lieutenant colonel and colonel in 1863. On March 13, 1865 he was appointed Brevet Brigadier General, USV. The 9th Ohio Cavalry joined the Atlanta Campaign and the March to the Sea and later accompanied the campaign into the Carolinas. Good solid copy of a scarce regimental, here with a nice presentation from the author to an old comrade's son. REFERENCES: DORNBUSCH Ohio 76; NEVINS I pg 99: “Contains many sidelights on army life, but the narrative as a whole is far too embellished to be acceptable at face value.” CIVIL WAR INDEX: “The 9th Ohio Cavalry (Three Years’ Service) was a Union cavalry regiment organized in Ohio during the American Civil War. The regiment was formed in 1863, with initial companies mustered at Camp Zanesville and the remaining companies at Camp Dennison. Serving in the Western and Southern theaters, the 9th Ohio Cavalry participated in several notable campaigns, including Rousseau’s Raid and General Sherman’s March to the Sea. The regiment was known for its active service in Alabama, Georgia, and the Carolinas, engaging in numerous skirmishes and major battles. It mustered out of service on July 20, 1865, at Lexington, North Carolina.”.…
