Lee: A Biography (1934—35) is widely regarded as the definitive 20th-century biography of Robert E. Lee. It won the Pulitzer Prize in 1935 and remained the standard "gold standard" life of Lee for decades. Freeman, a Virginia newspaper editor and lifelong Richmond resident, spent nearly 20 years researching and writing it. He had unparalleled access to the Lee family papers, Washington-Lee University archives, and Confederate veterans who had known Lee personally (the last interviews were conducted in the 1920s—early 1930s).; Signed by Author.
